Janie Porter Barrett (1865 - 1948) was born in Athens in 1865 to a mother who had been emancipated only 3 months before. Barrett’s mother’s employers provided her with an education, and after graduating from Hampton Institute, Barrett, she founded Locust Street Social Settlement (1890) and the Virginia Industrial School for Colored Girls (1915), two early institutions for Black Americans.
