The Complex Cloth Installation is now open! Come visit!

The Complex Cloth installation explores the entwined histories of the University of Georgia, social work, and labor in Athens, Georgia—and makes these stories visible in the antebellum cotton mill building that now houses the UGA School of Social Work in Athens.

With more than 40 photo-murals, art pieces, and historical artifacts, the installation extends over all four floors of the School of Social Work and outside to the deck, where the ruins of the factory’s old dam and millrace are still visible. The project engages students in telling these historical stories, giving building tours and thinking creatively about history and its place in social work education.

We are grateful to the Carl and Sally Gable Foundation and to the many collaborators and contributors who have made this work possible. THANK YOU!

Community members are encouraged to tour the exhibit. Self-guided tours can be downloaded here and are available at the School’s front desk. (Please be sure to sign in when you arrive.) Paid parking is available in UGA’s North Deck. Classroom and group tours can be arranged by contacting Dr. Jane McPherson at jmcpherson@uga.edu

Whether it’s a self-guided tour or a guided tour, there are many ways to experience the Complex Cloth installation in person.

Listen to the Complex Cloth Fellows; they are collaborators and storytellers in the Complex Cloth Installation.

Listen to the Complex Cloth music playlist during your visit or from anywhere as you engage with the work.
