Portrait of Carrie Steele Logan (1888)
Carrie Steele Logan (1829 - 1900) opened an orphanage in Atlanta in 1888, that that home— which continues to operate—still bears her name. She is quoted as saying that the home was “meant to care for and train to honest labor the hundreds of colored orphans who are growing up as material for the chain gang.”
